Who I am

Zac has three degrees in meteorology from the University of Oklahoma culminating in a Ph.D. While there Zac worked on several projects related to flooding and flash flooding across the globe. Zac developed the Ensemble Framework for Flash Flood Forecasting (EF5) for use in high spatiotemporal resolution flash flood forecasting across the CONUS with radar based precipitation estimates. EF5 is also used in support of NASA SERVIR flood monitoring, flood forecasting, and capacity building activities in Africa. Zac spent many years living in Oklahoma and chasing tornadoes. Now Zac enjoys traveling to new places for new adventures and returning to old favorites to experience the wonder once again.

What I Work On

I am a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Chicago Center for Data Intensive Science. I work on creating environmental data commons for the scientific community and specifically with the Open Commons Consortium Open Science Data Cloud on the NOAA Big Data Project. I also founded WeatherWary LLC and make iOS apps that display weather data including NEXRAD radar and GOES satellite imagery. Previously, I was the lead developer on the University of Oklahoma & NOAA/NSSL Flooded Locations and Simulated Hydrographs (FLASH) project to improve flash flood warnings.
